Val de Jesus

This has been Val de Jesus day-to-day way of life since pandesal was still at 10 centavos a piece until it reached P1 Son of a plumber and a dressmaker, he claimed that though he’s the fourth among five children, he’s the most adventurous and “malakas ang loob”.

However, Val kept this lifestyle secret from his classmates and friends.”Nakakahiya kasi binata na tapos nanliligaw na, hanggang sa magkaroon ng girlfriend nagtitinda ka pa ng pandesal,” he said.

From elementary to highschool and college, ako bumibili ng sapatos, uniporme, bag, pati baon. He credits Mang Boy Gamboa, the owner of the bakery who he considered as his life’s mentor. Mang Boy’s bakery was forced to close down, however, and Val was left with no source of income.

He then worked as a crew for a burger-stand chain followed by a number of blue-collar jobs from handicraft painter, basket maker, department store ”bagger”, gift dedication writer, factory worker, and eventually back to handicrafts with a new racket making streamers.

With his skills, though he did not finish college, an impressed customer referred him to a firm in Makati as an in-house artist. There, Val saw himself in a different light. With the new environment, he began to mature.

But fate again was not on his side, the company got bankrupt and-just like Mang Boy - forced to close down. He had no other choice but to find a new job.

Armed with experience, knowledge and acquired skills, he was hired by an ad agency. During the time, he began to have great accomplishments as an artist, which include the design of the first PLDT Touch Card in 1997 and the Jubilee 2000 car plate. He did not last long, however, with this job.

Again, with no source of livelihood, it was during the rough times when Atty. Ric Gatdula introduced DXN to him. Val decided to try doing the DXN business since the considered himself adept in meeting people.

He immediately managed to achieve the Star Agent status on the first month, earned P30,000 on the third and within a year, he was earning an average of P50,000 each month.

He also mentioned there were times when he got rejected by his relatives and close friends. ”Well in fact, nang-aasar pa at nang-iinis, may mga nagtatago, nang-iindian, nangangako at kung anu-ano pa ,” Val added.

He’s currently a Star Diamond, earning an average of P140,000 per month.

Salamat kay Lord,” he said.
